When the world turned upside down, we dove right into the chaos. Opening a loss mitigation company in the middle of the recession, we went all in to serve those around us and learned a valuable lesson.
I glanced up from my computer across the table at Jorge. The two of us knew I only had 30 days left at my corporate job, and in the uncertain time of a housing market crash, we decided to open our own business.
We both had many years of experience in finance at the time, particularly in lending. For three weeks, we spent every day at Panera Bread making use of the free Wi-Fi and complimentary coffee refills while planning our next step. We had realized through trying to save our own properties how much others were struggling and the lack of resources out there to help. So, we decided to create our own.
Together we studied every program out there and became experts before opening our doors. I became a licensed REALTOR® and Jorge continued as a loan officer. The people we served kept us going through all the sleepless nights because we could not let them down. Over the course of the three years we ran that business, we helped hundreds if not more than a thousand families. It was tough, and the hours were long. However, we knew we had to keep trying even it might take 1000 tries to get it right, because only when we give up do we fail.
Both of us come from humble beginnings with single mothers who worked extremely hard to provide us with new opportunities. Jorge’s mother brought him and his six older sisters to the US from Mexico when he was eight years old. Back then it was a different time, and he quickly learned what it meant to be the underdog. He immersed himself in American culture and has lived here ever since.
My mother returned to school while my siblings and I were young to earn her nursing degree and change our lives. She went on to build a successful career by moving through that initial hardship, working long hours for several years before any of it paid off.
We have worked hard and continue that legacy of taking things to the next level in our family for us, our daughter and our grandson. Jorge and I learned early in life that real estate is the best path to build wealth in this country. Not only have we fought against all odds to succeed, but we have become examples for others of what one can accomplish when starting from nothing in this land of endless opportunity.
We closed our loss mitigation company in 2013 when the market shifted once again and embraced life as full-time REALTORS®. The people we serve are what drive us, and they always have been. The people in our community are the reason we own a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym as well.
Jorge has been practicing the sport for years, and when the local dojo was at risk of closing, he and several others stepped in to keep it going. The children there have been together for years, and we could not stand by to let it all be lost. We love being a part of our community and a positive influence on others, especially the children in our gym to help them flourish and create the lives of their dreams.
Whenever we are not working, we enjoy traveling and scuba diving. Our favorite part of being REALTORS® is helping our clients win by getting them to where they are going despite every impossibility.
